CHAPTER 17
Let us be imitators of them also who went about in goat-skins and sheep-skins, preaching the coming of Christ; we mean Elias and Elisaeus and Ezekiel the prophets, and beside them those who have obtained a good report.
Abraham obtained an exceeding good report, and was called the friend of God, and saith, looking steadfastly to the glory of God in humility, I am but ᵃearth and ashes.
And, moreover, concerning Job, it is thus written: ᵃJob was a just man and blameless, truthful, one that feared God, and abstained from all evil.
But he himself, accusing himself, saith, ᵃNo one is ᵇpure from pollution, though his life be but for one day.
Moses was called faithful in all his house, and by his ministry God judged his people Israel by stripes and punishment. But he, though he was greatly glorified, spake not haughtily, but said, when the oracle was given him out of the bush, ᵃWho am I that thou sendest me? I am ᵇweak of voice and ᶜslow of tongue.
And again he saith, I am but as the smoke from a pot.
